Text-to-speech pay-as-you-go: how it works and when it's cheaper than a subscription
By GetMeAudio Team · · 4 min read
"Pay as you go" gets used loosely by a lot of tools that still require picking a monthly plan first. Here's what it actually means for GetMeAudio, concretely, with no subscription step anywhere in the flow.
There's no plan to pick
You don't choose a monthly tier sized for your busiest month. You top up a prepaid AudioMinutes balance — as small or as large as you want — and spend from it only when you download a finished file. Drafting and previewing don't touch the balance at all.
What it actually costs
Downloads are billed per second, at a fixed rate for the quality tier you chose: Standard is ₹5/minute (~$0.15), Natural is ₹9/minute (~$0.25). That rate doesn't change based on how much you buy at once — a ₹49 top-up and a ₹4,900 top-up both spend at the same per-minute rate, with no bulk-discount tier to unlock and no penalty for buying small.
Your balance doesn't expire in 30 days
AudioMinutes are valid for 12 months from purchase, not a rolling monthly window. Buy once, use it across the year however your projects actually land — one big push in month one, or a few minutes every couple of months. Unused balance from an older top-up is always spent before a newer one (oldest-first), so buying more never resets or shortens what you already had.
When this beats a subscription
If you produce hours of audio every single month, a subscription's amortized per-minute cost will usually beat pay-as-you-go — that's a fair trade for someone actually filling a large monthly quota. But for occasional use — a few voiceovers a month, nothing on a fixed schedule — a subscription means paying a flat fee whether you use it or not. Do the math on a specific case or just try it — drafting costs nothing either way.
