Save, reopen and move your voiceover projects: autosave, project files and subtitle import
By GetMeAudio Team · · 4 min read
A voiceover rarely gets finished in one sitting. This guide covers the four things that keep your work safe and portable in the GetMeAudio editor: autosave, Save, Open, and Import subtitles. None of them costs any AudioMinutes.
Autosave: your work is kept in this browser
As you type, the editor saves your script, speakers, voice choice, settings and pronunciation rules to this browser. The Saved to browser badge at the top of Step 1 confirms it. Reload the page, or leave to sign in and come back, and you pick up where you stopped.
Two limits worth knowing. Autosave lives only on this device and browser, so it does not follow you to your phone or laptop. And clearing site data or working in a private window removes it. For anything you care about, save a file too.
Save: download a project file
Click Save in the Step 1 toolbar. You get a small .gma.json project file. On Chrome and Edge a Save As dialog lets you choose the folder; other browsers drop it in your downloads. The file keeps your script, speakers, voice and quality tier, speed, volume and music settings, fit-to-time target and pronunciation rules.
Good moments to save: before clearing browser data, before switching devices, or to keep a version of a script you might reuse for a series.
Open: continue on any device
Click Open and choose a saved .gma.json file. The editor restores everything from the file, on any device or browser. This is how you move a project from your laptop to your phone, hand it to a teammate, or restart a series from a saved template script.
Import subtitles: start from an SRT or VTT file
Already have captions? Click Import subtitles and choose a .srt or .vtt file. Each subtitle line becomes a line of your script, and the gaps between lines are carried over as pauses. Then edit the wording, add pauses or a second speaker, pick a studio voice and download.
One honest limit: the original per-line timing is not kept. GetMeAudio times the new narration itself, so the result will not match the original video frame-for-frame. Expect to nudge the audio against your edit, or use Fit to time for a target length. Importing is undoable if it is not what you wanted, and every download can include a fresh matching .SRT or .VTT.
Try edits without using preview minutes
While you rework an imported or reopened script, the Device-Based Editor ("Testing pacing? Try a free device-voice check" under your script) plays it with a voice built into your device, free and unlimited. The voices available depend on your device settings. When it reads right, preview the real studio voice in Step 2.
FAQ
Is my work saved automatically? Yes, to this browser only. Use Save to keep a copy that survives clearing browser data or moves between devices.
Does saving or opening a project cost anything? No. Only downloading a finished voiceover spends AudioMinutes.
Can I import the timing from my subtitle file? No. The text and the gaps between lines are imported, not the per-line speech timing.
