Pauses, Speed and Timing: Your Questions Answered

How to place pauses, control pace, and hit an exact running time.

How do I add a pause?

Use the Insert pause button in the editor. It places a pause tag in your script that you can see and move. You can also type a break tag by hand.

How long can a pause be?

From 0.1 seconds up to 10 minutes per pause.

How many pauses can a script have?

There is no limit on the number of pauses in a script.

Can the editor add pauses automatically?

Yes. Auto Breathe adds natural gaps after sentences, clauses and paragraphs. There is also a free pause planner tool that does the same for any pasted text.

Do pauses cost extra?

A pause is silence in the audio, so it adds to the length you are billed for at download, like any other second of audio.

How do I make the voice speak slower or faster?

Use the speed slider, which runs from 0.5× to 2×.

Does changing speed change the pitch?

No. Speed changes keep the pitch the same.

Can I make the voiceover fit an exact length?

Yes. Enter a target length in Fit to time and the download is time-stretched to match without changing pitch, as long as the target is reasonably close to the natural length.

How can I estimate how long my script will be?

Use the free script length calculator, or play a free draft in the editor. Length depends on the voice, so a preview gives the closest figure.

How many words is a 60-second voiceover?

Roughly 150 words in English at a normal narration pace. Other languages differ.

Why do some tools ignore long pauses?

Some services limit how long a single break tag can be or how many they honour. GetMeAudio generates the silence itself, which is why a pause can be up to ten minutes.
